Life’s realities—that it can be cruel and rewarding– combine in “The Upside,” a 2017 comedy-drama that will be screened free for the public on Dec. 14 in Tacoma as part of a film series on aging-related issues.

“The Upside,” rated PG and starring Bryan Cranston, Kevin Hart and Nicole Kidman, is inspired by the real-life experience of Frenchman Philippe Pozzo di Borgo. Its two main characters, a wealthy New York City businessman and an unemployed parolee, have lost heart as their lives seem to be spiraling downhill with no apparent way out. 

“In many ways this is a film about how we deal with the challenges life presents to us,” said Aaron Van Valkenburg, manager of Aging and Disability Resources, sponsor of the “Images of Aging” film series. “Each of us can overcome those obstacles by making the best use of our individual support networks. Sometimes those networks are natural – families and friends – while other times they can be through accidental acquaintances.”
