During one of his regular walks with his dog on the campus of Point Defiance Village where he lives in Tacoma, Ed Arnold noticed that many of the benches for sitting and enjoying the view were showing their age and could use a little TLC. So he took it upon himself to give one of the benches a fresh paint job with a design supporting his favorite football team, the Seattle Seahawks. Arnold, 75, isn’t a painter or artist by trade. Before retiring in 2003, he worked as a funeral director, embalmer and counselor. But he loves painting and is putting his hobby to work around his senior living community. The first bench makeover was such a success that he has gone on to revamp four more in the past year and plans to paint the rest of them soon — but probably not on the Seahawks’ game days.
