In recognition of National Lighthouse Day, Lighthouse Park in Tacoma will be the scene of a public celebration Aug. 3, with the park’s namesake–Browns Point Lighthouse—at the center of attention, as it’s been for passing ships since the 1930s.

Points Northeast Historical Society, keeper of the 86-year-old lighthouse, will host festivities from 1 to 4 p.m. that will include a free ice cream social, live music, games and crafts for children, a family scavenger hunt, and a free raffle for the prize of a two-night stay in the adjacent 1903 Light Keepers cottage.

Points Northeast volunteers will provide public tours of the historic site, as it does on all Saturday afternoons from May through September. More information is available at pointsnortheast.org.

National Lighthouse Day is unofficial this year, as it has been every year except 1989 and 2013—the years it was authorized by Congress.
