New mental health clinic serves vets of all ages

The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Valley Cities has opened in Lakewood, offering mental health services to many military veterans and their families, regardless of veteran discharge status or ability to pay.

While the clinic’s primary focus is post-9-11 vets, the clinic will serve veterans of any age and their spouses and children. A spokeswoman said the clinic’s telehealth option “should prove to be very helpful for older vets who may be more comfortable receiving care from the comfort of their own home, either over the phone or via a computer or tablet.”

The Lakewood clinic, located at 6103 Mt. Tacoma Dr. SW.,  is a partnership of Cohen Veterans Network, a not-for-profit, nationwide network of clinics, and Valley Cities, a non-profit behavioral health organization whose locations in Auburn, Enumclaw, Federal Way, Kent, Midway, Renton and Seattle provides treatment, recovery and support services for people who have substance use and mental health issues.

The Lakewood clinic, which opened in March, is the first of its kind in Washington and Cohen’s 11th nationally. It’s expected to serve 500 veterans in its first year.
