Puyallup ranks high nationally in AARP driver classes

Puyallup Senior Activity Center is one of the 100 most prolific sources in the country of AARP-sponsored driver safety courses.
The distinction was announced in July by AARP, which named its Top 100 Host Award winners from among the 18,000-plus organizations nationwide that host the driver refresher courses.
In 2013, the Puyallup center offered 17 courses, reaching 259 participants. Nationally, AARP Driver Safety volunteers work with more that community organizations to offer more that 30,000 courses each year. Collectively, the top 100 hosts held 2,000 courses and reached more that 43,000 participants last year, AARP officials said.
The courses have “a critical role in educating drivers and helping them maintain their safety and independence,” said Julie Lee, national director of AARP Driver Safety. “Our initiative would not be so successful without the support of our host organizations, who generously dedicate staff time, resources and facility space to serving older Americans.”
