Stay seated while turning off lights

Switchmate is described by its makers as a way to automate lighting controls at home and make life easier for seniors and anyone else with mobility issues or declining eyesight.

Manufactured by a company of the same name, Switchmate can be used on any standard light switch via a smartphone (iOS and Android), making it convenient to turn lights on or off without getting up from the sofa, chair or bed. Switchmate magnetically attaches to any standard light switch (rocker or toggle) and syncs with the companion app. Lights can be controlled via timers or the “welcome home” feature (which senses the sync’d phone via Bluetooth and turns on the lights so they come on when you enter the home.)

Customers can still use their manual on-off when that’s more convenient.

Priced at $39.99, Switchmate is sold at or through Amazon.com, Bed Bath & Beyond, HSN, Fry’s Electronics, and Target. By late-October, it will be available in over 10,000 retail storefronts in the U.S. and Canada, according to company officials.
