Two Lutheran Community Services Northwest volunteers – Al Butler, who’s active in Kitsap County, and David Chung, whose involvement includes the Korean community  – have been named as recipients of the 2013 Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer Service Award.

The two men, who have contributed a combined 15,000-plus hours of volunteer time between them, were honored during a ceremony in Olympia at the governor’s mansion in April.

Butler has volunteered with RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) since 1994 and has served 6,242 hours. He’s a member of the program’s advisory council, has been an escort for daily and overnight senior center trips, and volunteers in the office. He also manages and performs with the Spectapulars, a senior tap-dancing troupe which has had over 500 performances the past 14 years. And he’s a member of Central Kitsap Kiwanis.

Chung has been volunteering with LCSNW’s Senior Companion program for more than 13 years, contributing more than 9,154 hours. As an added asset to the Korean community, he translates important documents for other volunteers. Seniors from all over the community contact Chung for resources, suggestions and support regarding senior services.  Chung also works full-time for Multicultural Self-Sufficiency Movement as a program director.
