Pierce County election officials hope to hear from people who want to run for 31 offices that so far have zero candidates.

Last week’s official filing period for candidacies in this fall’s election came and went with nobody signing up for 31 races, most of them for various fire and utility districts. So a special filing period, as required by state law, will be held May 14-16: Filing can be done online at piercecountywa.gov/elections or in person at the county’s election center, located at 2501 S. 35th St. in Tacoma.

The offices in need of candidates are South Prairie Town Council; Fire Districts 10 (Fife), 23 (Ashford), 25 (Crystal Mountain), and 26 (Greenwater; Ashford, Burnett, Clear Lake, East Gig Harbor, Elbe, Elkhorn, Kapowsin and Kopachuck water districts; and Crystal Mountain and Wollochet sewer districts.
